The Mars-Rennet Commotion
Thursday, May 17, 2007
I'm sure many of you have heard the news about Mars planning to use rennet in a large number of it's chocolate products. Well, I've emailed Masterfoods a complaint but am still waiting to here back from them; but for some reason, I get the feeling that this was never planned to go ahead. Instead, the news item was released as a way of creating controversy and as a result heightening publicity. If one was to think about it, 1.6million Muslims - a large percentage of which are under 20... and also the huge vegetarian demography; it would be suicide in terms of sales and profits for such a company to lose such key customer bases.
The only plausible explanation I can muster up at this current point is that using rennet actually cuts production costs by huge amounts (not verified and I doubt it) and as a result Mars save a lot of money on overheads.
